Overview

The Town is considering ways to increase use of the Old Town Hall Theatre and reimagining its role as a centre for arts, culture, and celebrations in the community.

What's Changing

The Old Town Hall Theatre remains available to rent for staging everything from musical and theatre performances, to family celebrations and corporate functions. What has changed is the creation of an Old Town Hall Theatre Advisory Committee. As part of their mandate, the Committee is responsible for:

  • Advising and making recommendations regarding programming and use of the Old Town Hall;
  • Helping the Town to identify community and area-wide needs, as well as to explore partnership opportunities for new programming and service delivery methods; and,
  • Championing the Old Town Hall through positive support and promotion in the community.

The community may notice increased advertising of the facility as being available to rent, as well as may note increased activity at the Old Town Hall as a result of our efforts. Changes may also be noted by renters as we continue to make improvements to equipment and the facility.

Why It Matters

The Old Town Hall Theatre is a symbol of Aylmer's architectural and cultural heritage. Built in 1874, in an Italianate style, the Theatre is one of the finest historic buildings in the community. It has a storied past, having hosted performances and addresses in the 1880s by renowned poetess Pauline Johnson and Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.

Today, the Theatre continues to host a variety of events ranging from live musical and theatrical performances, to weddings and corporate gatherings. With seating for up to 180 guests, the venue offers users and their guests modern amenities in a charming historic venue.

As an iconic piece of our architectural and cultural landscape, we are committed to continuing our efforts to reimagine the venue for current and future generations.

  • Old Town Hall Theatre - View from the Balcony

    The Old Town Hall Advisory Committee is exploring opportunities to enhance the utilization of the Old Town Hall Theatre. This historic venue, located at 38 John Street South in downtown Aylmer, offers a unique setting for a variety of events. The theatre features main floor and balcony seating with a total capacity of 180 guests in theatre-style arrangements. Amenities include a stage, piano rental, light and sound equipment, dressing rooms, a kitchen with a fridge, a beverage bar, podiums, a projection screen, and elevator access. With rental rates starting as low as $30 per hour, it provides exceptional value for a fully equipped performance, conference, and presentation space in the heart of downtown Aylmer.

    One project being considered by the Committee is a new projection system for the Old Town Hall Theatre. The proposed projection system would enable high-quality multimedia and film presentations on the existing 12ft screen. The Committee is issuing this survey to determine if community organizations or members would be interested in this potential upgrade.

    The Committee is actively seeking community and stakeholder input to assess interest in this proposed upgrade and to identify any additional needs or obstacles that may exist. Feedback collected will be invaluable in guiding future improvements and ensuring that the Old Town Hall continues to serve as a vibrant cultural and community hub in Aylmer.
